LIVE OAK CARVINGS

We are learning more about the History of this area every day. Before Hurricane Katrina destroyed the Gulf Coast there were hundreds of Live Oak Trees that lined HWY 90. These Oak Trees are nothing like our Oak Trees in Iowa. Here are two that are in the RV Resort where we are staying. These are very small compared to some that are along the coast.

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast with high winds, heavy rains and a 30-foot storm surge, causing massive damage to the area.Katrina came ashore during the high tide at 6:56AM. 90% of the buildings along the coast in Biloxi and neighboring Gulfport had been destroyed by the hurricane.

Hurricane-force winds persisted for 17 hours and tore the branches off many coastal oak trees, but the tree trunks survived the 30-foot flood and many have since regrown smaller branches.

The Live Oaks in these photos are just a fraction of what remained after Katrina hit the Gulf coast. They have since then been carved by "ARTISTRY IN WOOD". "Custom Creations" by Dayton and Michelle Scoggins.

While doing laundry one morning another lady there told me that the really old Live Oak Trees are numbered and insured. If you have a Live Oak on your property you cannot cut it or trim it for any reason without permission from the City.

Mardi Gras Parades have begun. David and I are planning on going to one Sat. the 19th of Jan. I am not going to be here for the big parade on Fat Tuesday (Feb.5). Our grandson, Cash, turns one year old on Feb. 4th. I will be flying to Indianapolis, IN on the 1st to spend a week with him.

Beautiful carvings! WOW!
It's -2 degrees here, so your cool spell would be a heat wave to us!
Today is Mom and Dad's birthdays, and we're planning a surprise open house for them this afternoon. I actually think that they will be surprised...unless Mom should happen to read this note...LOL!
Actually, she has looked at your blog, but I feel pretty sure that she won't between now and the party.
Anyhow....We'll be in Montrose celebrating this afternoon.
